World Renown Environmentalist’s ‘Trees for Jane’ Campaign Supports UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration and the Trillion Tree campaign

  • Trees for Jane – inspired by Goodall, DBE, founder of the Jane Goodall Institute and UN Messenger of Peace – aims to stop deforestation and help replenish the world’s dwindling stock of trees and forests through community-based protection and reforestation programs.
  • Campaign aims to inspire, educate and engage a global audience to act now, as the world nears a tipping point in the fight against climate change.
  • In the launch film, A Trillion Trees, Goodall calls on every person and every business to plant and care for trees in their backyards, on rooftops or with local community groups.  
  • People and businesses can support forest protection and restoration efforts led by indigenous leaders, forest communities, NGOs working to stop deforestation at www.TreesforJane.org

New York City, New York – September 21, 2021 – Today, during UN General assembly and Climate Week, world renowned environmentalist Dr. Jane Goodall announced Trees for Jane – a grassroots movement to educate people on the effects of deforestation. The movement hopes to galvanize a global audience — from students and teachers, to activists, to corporations and governments – to take immediate action to replenish the world’s forests. The campaign launches in support of the UN’s Decade on Ecosystem Restoration and their previously announced goal to plant one trillion trees by 2030, encouraging all citizens of the world to plant and care for a tree.

Jane Goodall’s Reasons for Hope is based on iconic Jane Goodall’s philosophy of hope for the world and all of life on it, including both the natural world and its’ human inhabitants. Dr. Jane Goodall, DBE, founder of the Jane Goodall Institute and UN Messenger of Peace, has long been recognized as a trailblazer who revolutionized our understanding of the world. Drawing on historical footage of Jane’s early primate research and her current work as a global advocate for environmental and wildlife conservation, the film will highlight inspiring stories – inclusive of those advanced by her namesake institute – that embody Jane’s reasons for hope across four key themes: the energy and dedication of young people, the extraordinary human brain, the resilience of nature, and the indomitable human spirit. This is Science North’s 8th giant screen film, which includes Jane Goodall’s Wild Chimpanzees released in 2002 to international great acclaim.

Goodall Joins Past Laureates Mother Teresa and Francis Collins as First Female Ethologist to Receive One of the World’s Largest Individual Lifetime Achievement Awards

Dr. Jane Goodall, DBE, founder of the Jane Goodall Institute, UN Messenger of Peace, and world-renowned ethologist and conservationist, whose groundbreaking discoveries changed humanity’s understanding of its role in the natural world, was announced today as the winner of the 2021 Templeton Prize. The Templeton Prize, valued at over $1.5 million, is one of the world’s largest annual individual awards. Established by the late global investor and philanthropist Sir John Templeton, it is given to honor those who harness the power of the sciences to explore the deepest questions of the universe and humankind’s place and purpose within it. Unlike Goodall’s past accolades, the Templeton Prize specifically celebrates her scientific and spiritual curiosity. The Prize rewards her unrelenting effort to connect humanity to a greater purpose and is the largest single award that Dr. Goodall has ever received.
